Concussion Recovery: A Biopsychosocial Perspective

Thalia Otamendi, PhD Graduate Student, Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of British Columbia

Thalia Otamendi, Rehabilitation Sciences Ph.D. student at the University of British Columbia became interested in researching concussions after her own complicated journey with the injury. Through her research, she is contributing to the growing understanding of psychological barriers and facilitators to concussion recovery.

Recovery from concussion (or any injury for that matter) can be influenced by biological, psychological, or social elements. For example, previous concussion history, the presence of psychological stressors, or the ability to access/afford evidence-based care, can all interact to determine how long someone will take to recover. This presentation will cover concussive injuries from a biopsychosocial perspective and focus on psychological barriers and facilitators to recovery.
