Brain Injury Awareness Month

June 2024

Brain Injury Awareness Month (BIAM) is recognized throughout the month of June in Canada. Annually, various national, provincial, and local associations organize campaigns to enhance understanding regarding the frequency of brain injuries. These initiatives aim to shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with brain injuries and emphasize the necessity for additional services and support throughout the recovery process. Everyday lives are affected by brain injury:

  • Worldwide, 69 million people sustain a  traumatic brain injury every year.
  • Every 5 minutes, someone in Canada has a stroke.
  • 1 in 4 people accessing mental health and substance use services have a history of brain injury.
  • People with brain injury are 2.5x more likely to be incarcerated.
  • Up to 82% of people experiencing homelessness have a traumatic brain injury.

BIAM at BIAPH

The BIAPH flower logo sits on top of the words Brain Injury Awareness Month. Each word is on a different line, with the word Awareness in Green. To the right is a hand, hovering above the hand is a black and white brain. To the bottom, a green ribbon runs through.BIAPH is excited to commemorate Brain Injury Awareness Month (BIAM) by honouring our members and the extraordinary stories that shape their experiences. We are sharing those stories through our photobook, “Unveiling Resilience — Narratives Of Senior Acquired Brain Injury Survivors”. Social media posts throughout the month will highlight these thought-provoking recounts of the daily life of a brain injury Survivor.

Our 2023 BIAM Social welcomed Oakville’s MPP Stephen Crawford who joined BIAPH to acknowledge the Ontario Trillium Foundation in their support of BIAPH’s Skill Building Webinar —  released in September, 2023.
